Badger Volunteer Leader Page

Registration is now open for BVLs for the Spring semester!

What is Badger Volunteers?
Badger Volunteers is one of the newest initiatives sponsored by the Morgridge Center to provide meaningful and consistent service to the communities surrounding the UW-Madison and to support students in service.

Teams of students partner with a community organization for a minimum of one semester. Each team receives education, training, and orientation on the organization, community, and social issue while providing meaningful weekly service. In this semester-long program, teams of students volunteer every week at local organizations in and around Madison under the coordination of a Badger Volunteer Leader. Students interested in volunteering sign up for a specific issue area early in the semester and begin volunteering as a group on a weekly basis the third week of the semester. Issue areas for the 2008-09 school year will be hunger, homelessness, youth, and education.

How does it work?

If you are interested in volunteering at the same non-profit on a weekly basis with a group of students then you should sign up to be a Badger Volunteer! Each Badger Volunteer must make a commitment to volunteer on weekly basis at the specified time for the volunteer opportunity they sign up with for the rest of the whole semester.

Important things you should know:
1.
You sign up for only one of the opportunties that fits your schedule and interests for the whole semester. There is a capacity for each site, so sign up for the one you want early. Registration is closed for the fall 2009 semester.

2. You'll have a student Badger Volunteer Leader that will lead your group so you don't need to worry about transporation, logistics, and contacting the agency on your own.

3. As part of the Badger Volunteers program, you attend an orientation, receive training, and be part of a Badger Volunteer end of the semester celebration.

4. Transportation is already worked out for these sites. You will either be walking or taking the bus to your site with your Badger Volunteer team OR using the Morgridge Center Volunteer Transportation Program that provides free taxi rides.

5. You get a cool Badger Volunteers t-shirt.

6. If you expect to miss more than a week of volunteering during the semester, then Badger Volunteers might not be the program for you--we expect students to be there each week.

8. Badger Volunteers is awesome!

Sign up process:

1. Choose the volunteer opportunity that is right for your interests and schedule for the whole semester. Each volunteer opportunity has a select number of slots available.

2. Fill out an online registration form with your basic information and select the volunteer opportunity you'd like to sign up for starting September 2-14. The list of sites and volunteer opportunities are below.

3. Once you have received an email stating that you secured a spot for your Badger Volunteer opportunity you will be invited to attend the Badger Volunteers Orientation.

4. Attend the Badger Volunteer Orientation on September 15 or 16. Meet your Badger Volunteer Leader and the other Badger Volunteer students with whom you will be volunteering with weekly, learn more details about your volunteer opportunity including transporation, expectations, and other details.

5. Volunteer each week for the rest of the semester at the same day and time from beginning the third week of the semester and ending the second to last week of the semester.
