The organization offers family center programming that provides participating families with an integrated program of early childhood education, adult education and basic skills instruction, parenting education, and interactive literacy activities for parents and their children.
Volunteers are needed to provide one-to-one tutoring for parents interested in learning English but who can’t read Spanish (their native language), lead activities that engage parents and children together in literacy activities, mentor and supervise children (ages 4-10) while parents are attending parenting and citizenship classes, and translate various materials.
All volunteers are welcome, regardless of language proficiency.
On-site orientation includes reviewing and completing paperwork, as well as discussing the volunteer’s goals and interests. This is followed by observation in the classroom where the volunteer will eventually be a tutor for adults or children. The volunteer works with the classroom teacher to implement his or her goals and provide volunteer service.
At our site there are also UW-Madison America Reads tutors who are paid through work-study. They participate in weekly meetings and training during the first semester. For the second semester, team meetings are weekly, but training is less intensive.
All service is welcome; volunteers are encouraged to serve even for a one-time event.
