Wisconsin Idea Undergraduate Fellowships Projects: 2000-01

 

The following nine projects were awarded for 2000-2001.

GuardCare 2000: Free Mobile Health Clinicand Smoking Cessation Program
Parker Kelly, Joanne Rash, Director of Clinical Education Jeff Nicholson, City of Beloit Health Department, Beloit Area Community Health Center
Partnering with the Wisconsin Army National Guard 13th Medical/Dental Unit, this project provided supervised health care services to underserved and underinsured residents in the City of Beloit Health Department and Kenosha County. Two areas of concern were womenÕs health and smoking cessation counseling.

Tiahui Outreach Program
Kathy Perez Castro, Adolfo Diaz, Julie Martinez, Cinthya Covarrubias, Debra Barrera Pontillo, Ray F. Sennett Middle School.
This project will address the issues that are affecting youth in the Latina/o and Chicana/o community. The program will focus on mentoring, academics and cultural development.

Menominee Language Educational Video: The Menominee Pow-wow
Rian McSwain, April Winecke, Zach Brott, Professor Monica Macaulay, College of the Menominee Nation.
This project will assist the Menominee tribe of Wisconsin in preserving their language by providing a one-hour educational video on their annual pow-wow. The video will be a teaching tool in the Menominee reservation schools and college.

Remembering the Hotel Washington: A Community Embraces its History Through Shared Experience
Professor Joseph Elder, Outreach, Inc.
The Hotel Washington was a respected landmark to the Madison community, and a pillar to the Madison Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community. There is a significant lack of historical connection between generations of the LGBT (LGBT) community; therefore, in an attempt to share experiences gained by community elders, the project will be a collage of essays and interviews from former patrons and employees of the hotel, as well as pictures and their memorabilia.

The Kelly Nachreiner Donor Education Project
Robert Trim, Professor Mary Keller, University of Wisconsin Organ Procurement Organization.
This proposal involves designing and evaluating an educational module on organ donations for driversÕ education programs throughout the state.

Salvation Army Learning Center
Jenny Gores-Todd, Chad Hewitt, Christal Stone, Professor Gary Sandefur, The Salvation Army.
This project will provide fun and educational activities for children living at the Salvation Army Shelter.

"ASPIRE" (Achieving Success by Promoting Interest in higheR Education)
Casey Gardonio, Brian Yablon, Professor Marianne Bloch, SHAPE.
ASPIRE encourages students from economically disadvantaged and minority backgrounds to pursue a college education.

Planting Seeds for Community Garden Growth
Connie Haag, Associate Professor Jack Kloppenburg, Madison Community Gardeners Coalition.
The project will develop educational and outreach materials to increase public awareness of community and school gardening in Madison. It involves photographing and documenting the state of community gardening in Madison in the 2000.

Bassett Neighborhood Inventory and Conservation District
Erica Christoph, Professor William Tishler, Bassett Project Management Team and Capitol Neighborhoods, Inc.
MadisonÕs historic Bassett neighborhood is struggling with deteriorating housing and development pressure, which threatens many of its original homes. To help reverse these trends and to help revitalize the neighborhood, the project will compile a neighborhood inventory and criteria to create a neighborhood conservation district.
