Edgewood College Human Issues Americorps*VISTA position- now hiring!

The Madison Campus Community Collaborative (MCCC) is a partnership between two higher education institutions (Edgewood College, UW-Madison) and three community organizations (Urban League of Greater Madison, YWCA Madison, Centro Hispano of Dane County). The MCCC partnership represents the interests of the community by providing a broad spectrum of services to families and children aimed at alleviating poverty. These services include supporting youth academic success, the economic empowerment of women, and the assistance of families who are marginalized due to obstacles such as language barrier.

Each site hosts a full-time AmeriCorps* VISTA dedicated to strengthening the partnership and services provided. Current initiatives being supported by the VISTAs include 1.) Schools of Hope Tutoring project- A city wide tutoring program to reduce the achievement gap among Madison youth, 2.) YW Transit- An alternative transportation program with the goal of reducing sexual assault, 3.) Assistance to families and children who are learning English as a second language.

AmeriCorps*VISTA is part of a federally funded national service program that engage Americans to a year in service to help alleviate poverty. As a VISTAs member, you agree to a year long position (starting in mid-July) that has a regular 40 hour work week.  As part of the Americorp*VISTA stipulations, you cannot hold other employment but are able to take one related course if desired.  Our members receive a stipend of $856 a month, health insurance and either a $4,750 Education Award or a Cash Award of $1,200 at completion of service.  To apply or view additional details, visit the website.

Each MCCC site hosts a full-time AmeriCorps* VISTA dedicated to strengthening the partnership. Edgewood College is recruiting for their 2008-09 AmeriCorps*VISTA position with the Human Issues Studies program. Position is OPEN IMMEDIATELY. Applications are being reviewed now.

The Human Issues Studies Program is an interdisciplinary, experiential program that offers Edgewood College students opportunities to engage meaningfully in issues of concern for a just and humane society. In addition to providing specific course-based and independent study opportunities for Edgewood juniors and seniors (three-credit graduation requirement), we promote and support civic engagement opportunities for all Edgewood students.
