The Dane County Farmers’ Market
The Dane County Farmers Market strives to make fresh local food available to everyone. Year-round, we implement our EBT program which allows families and individuals to buy farmers’ market products with their SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits. We also administer the Double Dollars program, a local program which matches SNAP benefits up to $25. Volunteers are needed each Saturday to help provide this service. Volunteers also spend their time answering questions and ensuring a positive market experience for all customers. Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens
The Madison Area Food Pantry Garden’s mission is to supply local food pantries with first-choice, nutritious and culturally relevant vegetables. On average, they donate 100,000 pounds of produce every year coming out to a whopping two million pounds donated since the inception of the gardens. Volunteers monitor the lab, ensure that lab users go through the proper sign-in process, and follow all rules. Volunteers are also available to any guest to assist with using the computers and related software. This may include one-on-one tutoring on basics from using Microsoft Word or opening an e-mail account to more advanced concepts such as making a simple chart on Excel. Volunteers are welcome to use the computers during their volunteer shift, and student volunteers are able to work on assignments while they volunteer. Literacy Network

ARMS encourages teachers to involve students in the process of science, using hands-on, inquiry based activities. This is difficult to do with one adult in a classroom full of students with varying abilities and interests. ARMS volunteers serve in a variety of roles to help all students participate in science. Achievement Connections

FoodShare at the Dane County Farmers’ Market
Friends of the Dane County Farmer’s Market strives to make fresh local food available to everyone. To help achieve our goal we set up the FoodShare Program at the Dane County Farmer’s Market. The FoodShare Program allows families and individuals to buy Farmers’ Market products with their Quest cards (or food stamps). Volunteers are needed each Saturday of the Dane County Farmers’ Market all year-round. Services are available at the Saturday market on the Capitol Square, at the Wednesday market on MLK JR Boulevard, and during the winter markets at the Monona Terrace and the Madison Senior Center. Volunteers run the EBT machine at the info booth, handing out Market Dollars to participants after Quest cards are scanned. Volunteers then redeem Market Dollars from vendors after they are spent.

City of Madison Parks
Created in 1983, the People for Parks program encourages citizens to take an active role in the maintenance and enhancement of our parks. Donated funds for specific projects are matched, allowing increased flexibility. Contributions of parkland, benches and trees have enhanced our parks. Stewardship efforts are visible through Earth Day clean ups, tree mulching, hiking trail repair, planting and weeding gardens, prairie seed collecting and assistance at special events. These activities involve individuals, community organizations, businesses, school groups and neighborhood associations throughout the community.

Sheltering Animals of Abuse Victims (SAAV)
Sheltering Animals of Abuse Victims (SAAV) is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ending the cycle of abuse within families. SAAV plays a unique role in this fight by recognizing the importance of animals as vital family members and arranging for their safe harbor at a time of critical need–when a domestic abuse victim seeks refuge from an abuser. Canopy Center
Canopy Center is a child abuse and prevention agency in Dane County. Two of our programs work with children and families involved in CHIPS (children in need of protection and services) cases in the juvenile court system. Dane County CASA volunteers visit the child weekly in their home, talk to everyone in the child’s life and write monthly progress reports to the judge and all legal parties to the case. Parent-to-Child volunteers provide supervised visit services with the hopes of bringing the family back together. They give the court objective reports about their observations, while also serving as a mentor and advocate for the parents and families. Canopy Center also offers a number of other direct service volunteer opportunities for students interested in social work, counseling, human services, or other related fields.

UW Hospital Volunteer
Volunteers provide exceptional care and help to the patients that visit UW Hospital and Clinics on a daily basis. They help in every way from greeting people at the front door, to providing assistance to those who are hospitalized. Volunteers are able to take the time needed to offer assistance to the patients at UW Hospital and Clinics in any non-medical way to make the patients feel more welcome and more comfortable. At a General Orientation the potential volunteer will sign up for a placement interview. Volunteers are required to have a Tuberculosis test and fill out a health form. Volunteers must pass a criminal background check. Volunteers will have complete training for the position they choose. Volunteers will be required to observe privacy rules, wear their name badge while on duty and dresses appropriately. Volunteers typically take one shift per week with hours varying from 2-4 hours.

Health advocates partner with an older adult to help prepare for and accompany to physician’s visits, ask questions at the doctor appointment that may otherwise be forgotten or not thought of, and help explain and encourage compliance with physician’s directives, such as medications. These volunteers play a vital role in the lives of older adults in need of help understanding their medical needs. Nursing students, retired physicians or nurses and other health professionals are especially encouraged to volunteer. Providing transportation to medical appointments is not required. Agrace Hospice and Palliative Care
Volunteers are at the heart of Agrace’s mission and help us to provide the best service to patients, families, and our staff. There are many different volunteer roles to choose from depending on your skills, interests, and schedule. Prior to volunteering, new volunteers complete: a phone interview, application, 2-step TB testing (except Thrift Store Volunteers), background checks, references, orientation, and role specific training. Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS)
Crisis Response Advocates provide immediate, face-to-face crisis intervention, safety planning, support, information and referrals to victims of domestic abuse at DAIS and other various community partnership locations. Crisis Response Advocates have the option to provide phone counseling, support, safety planning, information and referrals via the Help Line when not meeting with victims in person. Help Line services are available to victims and survivors of domestic abuse, their family, friends, other service providers, and the general public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Domestic Abuse Intervention Services
The Children’s Program provides children from violent homes with opportunities to engage in positive activities in a safe, structured environment. Advocates need to be flexible, patient, and will be co-facilitating group activities for children of various ages, ability levels, and backgrounds. Prior experience working with children is preferred. Activity groups are in the evenings. Flexible daytime and weekend shifts are also available. The Children’s Program provides rewarding experiences for individuals who enjoy working with children. Volunteers who provide direct service to clients must complete Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS) Advocate Training. Additional observation shifts, meetings, and in-services are required. Advocates must be at least 18 years old, have the ability to work with diverse populations, and to maintain confidentiality. DAIS requires Advocates to make at least a one year commitment of one shift per week. Shift times, days, and length may vary.

McBurney Disability Resource Center
Speakers discuss personal disability experiences, cultural differences (e.g., Deaf culture, disability in an international culture, etc.) as well as societal messages about disability, ableism and inclusion. Audiences range from students in residence halls and classes to campus organizations. As a volunteer speaker for the McBurney Speakers Bureau, you have the opportunity to educate peers and the campus community on disability issues by speaking on panels or solo, facilitating discussions, sharing your personal experiences, dispelling myths, fighting discrimination and spreading the message of equality. Speakers have personal experiences with disability or are allies of the disability community and are either UW-Madison students, faculty or staff. Most volunteers do 3-5 assignments per semester, as their schedules permit. No prior speaking experience is necessary.

LGBT OutReach
From coming-out groups to social support groups, OutReach needs people to facilitate and lead. Some groups meet for 2 hours at the OutReach Community Center for a set period of weeks, others may be less formal in their approach and meet on an on-going basis. In more formal support groups, once OutReach has collected enough names of interested persons, 1-2 facilitators (depending on the topic of the group) will be asked to interview prospective members in order to determine their appropriateness for the group. In more social-oriented groups, one or more people may take leadership roles in starting, organizing, and sustaining the group and recruiting new members. As facilitator, you will help determine how the group functions, what topics the group discusses, and what kinds of guest speakers the group might want to invite.

Residents and families of the YWCA programs come from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Literacy Network
The Literacy Network’s Community Literacy is an ESL Tutoring program for adult immigrants and refugees. Volunteer tutors work 1:1 with a learner every week, using a provided lesson plan from the Group Leader intern. The Group Leader supports 8 tutoring pairs in a shared space each week throughout the semester. Each tutor works with an adult learner on English speaking, reading, and writing skills directly related to the learner’s life goals. UNIDOS
LA RED is the only 24/7 Spanish Language help-line in Dane County. It provides support to victims and survivors of Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence from the Latinx, Immigrant, and LGBT+ communities. Three times a year UNIDOS is offering a fourteen hour training program. After the training you will be eligible to volunteer from the convenience of your home (We provide a cell-phone you can take with you for each 5:30PM-8:30AM shift). Volunteers must be proficient in Spanish, 18 years of age, and complete an application, phone interview, and in-person interview. We also ask that in return for attending the training volunteers make a one year commitment to covering 2 shifts per month. This is an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand experience working with people in crisis, receive formal training about working with the Spanish speaking/ immigrant communities, and build expertise for careers in advocacy or counseling.

Friends of the Dane County Farmer’s Market strives to make fresh local food available to everyone. To help achieve our goal we set up the FoodShare Program at the Dane County Farmer’s Market. Volunteers are needed each Saturday of the Dane County Farmers’ Market all year-round. The Lakeshore Nature Preserve is a 300 acre preserve located on the northwest side of campus along the free 80 bus route. Street Outreach Volunteers – Briarpatch Youth Services
Street Outreach Volunteers work closely with staff to provide an array of services for the community. Tenant Resource Center
The TRC is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting positive relations between rental housing consumers and providers throughout Wisconsin. This organization provides information and referrals, education about rental rights, and access to conflict resolution. Volunteers assist clients as housing counselors, mediators help negotiate agreements between tenants and landlords as well as provide office support for the center. Housing counselors help in the main office for 3-6 hours/week for a minimum of one year. We will train you on tenant landlord law and provide lots of support as you assist clients.

Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin, Inc.
CAC Gleaners – CAC operates a food recovery program called CAC Gleanders. As a volunteer driver, you will help fight hunger by collecting pershiable foods still safe for human consumption from various restaurants, cafeterias, and delis around town. CAC will try to match your route with geographical locations of your preference and availability. This is a regular, weekly commitment (substitutes can be supplied for illness and vacations). Most routes can be completed in about an hour. Volunteers can also help in the free clothing center with sorting, hanging and assisting participants make clothing selections. Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens
The Madison Area Food Pantry Garden’s mission is to supply local food pantries with first-choice, nutritious and culturally relevant vegetables. Adult Role Models in Science (ARMS) at UW-Madison Wiscience
ARMS encourages teachers to involve students in the process of science, using hands-on, inquiry based activities. UNIDOS
LA RED is the only 24/7 Spanish Language help-line in Dane County. It provides support to victims and survivors of Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence from the Latinx, Immigrant, and LGBT+ communities. Three times a year UNIDOS is offering a fourteen hour training program. After the training you will be eligible to volunteer from the convenience of your home (We provide a cell-phone you can take with you for each 5:30PM-8:30AM shift). Volunteers must be proficient in Spanish, 18 years of age, and complete an application, phone interview, and in-person interview. We also ask that in return for attending the training volunteers make a one year commitment to covering 2 shifts per month. Gilda's Club
Provides support to those with cancer and their families at the Gilda’s Club. On a rolling basis, they seek groups of 4-6 people to purchase, prepare, serve, and clean up after the Tuesday Family Night meals.

The Goodman Youth Grow Local Farm engages a diverse population of elementary, middle and high school students in hands-on, farm-based education in an outdoor classroom. Youth are actively involved in the entire process of running a small-scale organic urban farm. Independent Living Inc. Evening Meals on Wheels
Help ensure that no senior in your neighborhood goes hungry by joining Independent Living Inc’s team of volunteer delivery drivers. Your role would be to help deliver meals to seniors and adults with disabilities throughout the Greater Madison Area. Routes include: Madison, Middleton, and Fitchburg. Each route takes approximately one hour to complete with 10-12 stops per route. This is a Monday afternoon through Friday afternoon volunteer opportunity! Lakeshore Nature Preserve
The Lakeshore Nature Preserve is a 300-acre preserve located on the northwest side of campus along the free 80 bus route. Volunteers are vital to the success of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve’s mission of maintaining a clean and safe preserve, improving biological diversity, preventing erosion, and increasing our knowledge to help improve land stewardship. Volunteer tasks include removing invasive species, maintaining trails, cleaning fire circles, conducting surveys and collecting data, as well as collecting, sowing, and planting native seeds.

LGBT Books to Prisoners
LGBT Books to Prisoners is a donation-funded, volunteer-run organization that sends books and other educational materials, free of charge, to incarcerated LGBTQ people across the United States. At volunteer sessions, there are a variety of tasks for volunteers to work on depending on the workflow that day and volunteers’ individual skills and comfort level. Because of the time and energy it takes to train groups and work on quality control as volunteers get used to the work, we really appreciate it if groups can commit to attending for multiple sessions. Put a smile on a child’s face and make a difference in the community at the Madison Children Museum. Become an MCM volunteer! All volunteers must complete an application and clear a background check prior to their first day. Volunteers who want to commit to a weekly shift must also attend a general orientation and a visitor engagement training. Groups of 4 or more adults or youth may volunteer for special events and one-time projects on behalf of service clubs, scout troops, professional networks, or other organized groups. Outings in the Madison Area with MTILP, Inc.
At the Mobility Training and Independent Living Program, we make independent living possible! We need volunteers to accompany our clients and staff on short trips (half hour to an hour) in the Madison area. Common trips are as follows: Badger Bowl, parks, stores, restaurants, Humane Society, Monona Terrace, Olbrich Gardens, and Henry Vilas Zoo. Volunteers will need to be able to volunteer for 1-2 hours and push a client in a wheelchair during the community outing. Volunteers will also need a short orientation prior to volunteering.

UW–Madison Food Recovery Network
The goal of FRN is to foster values of sustainability on campus and in the surrounding community. We want to reduce the amount of food that is thrown out by the dining halls by recovering extra food from the day before and bringing it to various outlets in the community to address food insecurity.

Cross-Cultural Solutions
Cross-Cultural Solutions offers a wide range of safe, culturally immersive volunteer trips abroad that support the objectives of local communities in Latin America, Asia and Africa. Volunteers work alongside local people to address a specific community need based on their skills and interests, such as improving education for children, supporting those affected by HIV/AIDS or improving the quality of care for people with disabilities.
Amigos de Las Américas
Amigos de Las Américas trains college students to design and lead service projects in Latin America related to areas such as public health, youth engagement and environmental sustainability. The summer or gap year programs are a full-immersion cultural exchange where participants gain hands-on experience running community development projects while living with a host family in a small to medium sized community. The Wisconsin Chapter of Amigos de Las Américas invites students to join their training program to prepare for their service time abroad.
UBELONG
UBELONG is an international volunteer and learning organization that brings people together across borders to take action for positive change. Volunteers apply to a project in the community of their choice, such as assisting at a local sports center in Peru, working on an organic farm in Laos or supporting efforts to stop child labor in Ghana. Projects range from one to 24 weeks in length and are offered in communities all over the world at an affordable cost.
AIESEC
AIESEC is a global, youth-led organization that puts together international volunteer experiences for college students. Volunteers are matched with opportunities and organizations related to their area of interest, whether that be delivering sanitation, eradicating poverty or improving literacy. AIESEC provides support for students as they prepare for their time abroad and during the duration of their service. These experiences can range from 6 weeks to 18 months and volunteers often receive a stipend as well as basic support services like food and accommodation.
National
AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps engages more than 80,000 men and women in intensive service each year through more than 15,000 nonprofits, schools, public agencies, community and faith-based groups across the country. With the AmeriCorps State and National program, members serve with national and local nonprofit and community groups to help communities tackle pressing problem while mobilizing volunteers for the organizations they serve.
City Year
City Year is an AmeriCorps program for young adults ages 17 to 24 that works to bridge the gap in high poverty communities between the support that students actually need and what their schools are designed and resourced to provide. For 11 months, City Year Americorps members work full-time alongside teachers in schools providing individualized support to at-risk students who need extra attention.
AmeriCorps NCCC
AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) is a full-time, team-based residential service program for you adults ages 18-24. Members are organized into 10-12 member teams and carry out projects in public safety, the environment, youth development and disaster relief and preparedness.
AmeriCorps VISTA
AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) members serve a full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency to build the capacity of these organizations to carry out programs that fight poverty. VISTAs support programs that improve academic performance, expand job opportunities, develop financial assets, reduce homelessness and improve health services.
Public Allies
Public Allies is a 10-month long program that prepares talented young adults from diverse backgrounds for careers working for community and social change. Allies work full-time with a nonprofit organization addressing critical community issues, such as facilitating cross-cultural dialogue in a local neighborhood, recruiting and managing volunteers for a food bank or running an after-school program for youth. Allie earn a monthly stipend and an education award at the successful completion of the program.
Alternative Breaks – Wisconsin Union Directorate
Alternative Breaks provides service learning opportunities working with important issues such as the environment, education, immigration, poverty, and more. These are safe and affordable trips offered to UW-Madison undergraduate and graduate students offered during winter, spring and summer breaks both within the United States and abroad.

Badger Catholic
Every year, the student organization Badger Catholic offers around ten service trips over winter and spring breaks. In the past, trip destinations have included New Orleans, Charleston, Camden (NJ), South Dakota, North Carolina, Appalachia, and many other locations. Service trip participants engage in a variety of activities, including building houses with Habitat for Humanity, tutoring at elementary schools, and serving at soup kitchens and homeless shelters.
Badger Quest
Badger Quest is a program of The Crossing, a campus ministry committed to service, peace, social justice, the celebration of diversity, and environmental consciousness. Quest partners with local hosts to provide opportunities for young adults to travel in small groups to explore compelling issues both domestically and internationally.
Habitat for Humanity UW Chapter
Habitat for Humanity UW is a student organization that aims to inform people about affordable housing, build homes for families in need in the Madison area, and address the housing crisis on a national and international level. Members go on domestic and international break trips, fundraise, build one home in the Madison community annually, and host weekly builds.
Pay it Forward Bus Trip
This year, UW-Madison’s chapter of the student organization Students Today Leaders Forever will be sending out five Pay It Forward Tours over spring break. Each bus will travel to 5 cities en route to their Celebration Cities, Austin, TX and Salt Lake City, UT. Participants will do a series of unique service projects in each city during the day and leadership building activities at night.

UW Hillel Alternative Breaks
Hillel’s Alternative Breaks offer opportunities to give back to the global community, while making connections with other UW students. Past UW Hillel Alternative Break trips have traveled to Trinidad Tobago, Argentina, Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans, and Rwanda.
Wisconsin Experience Bus Trip
WEBT is an annual, weeklong trip in the summer for emerging student leaders on campus through the Wisconsin Union. WEBT brings UW–Madison student leaders together to expand on the Wisconsin Idea while traveling and serving throughout the state. Previous WEBT stops have included visiting an urban farm in Milwaukee, touring a dairy farm in Cleveland, holding a Q&A with Lambeau Field’s Outreach Manager, meeting with leadership at Lac du Flambeau reservation, having dinner with Wisconsin Alumni Association members in Eau Claire, and volunteering at a wildlife sanctuary.
