Posted on January 16, 2024 | By Xai Xiong

As the senior director of State Relations for the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Crystal Potts is the connecting piece between UW–Madison and the state government, balancing the interests and needs of Wisconsin legislators and policymakers with those of UW–Madison leadership, faculty and students.

Did you know that UW–Madison has an economic impact of $30 billion dollars annually on the state of Wisconsin? In this bonus episode, we talked about how Potts has seen UW–Madison’s impact across the state of Wisconsin and how she communicates this value to Wisconsin policymakers. Listen to learn how state funding of UW–Madison impacts the university’s competitiveness and how Potts advocates for the university while responding to legislators’ needs.

  • “The least commendable purpose of acquiring knowledge…is to apply it to one’s own advancement – to achieve worldly success. A higher purpose is to fit one to live the intellectual life…A third and the highest purpose of acquiring knowledge is to use it for the benefit of mankind.” — Former UW President Charles Van Hise
