Volunteering is a great way to meet people from different walks of life and learn about cultures different from your own. We have a few organizations that will give you the opportunity to volunteer both here and abroad.

At UW–Madison, students can participate in shared governance by volunteering to serve on a shared governance committee through the Associated Students of Madison (ASM). Shared governance is the idea that every individual who has a stake in the success of an organization should be represented in the decision-making process.

On these committees, students interact with faculty, administrators, and other staff to craft and implement policies that govern the operation of UW–Madison. These policies touch many aspects of the campus environment, including student life.

Committee service can be tailored to match a student’s major or career path. Some engineering students, for example, might consider serving on the Campus Transportation Committee. Students in the School of Business might be interested in serving on the Central Madison Business Improvement District (BID) Board, which is a City of Madison committee. The experience, skills, and connections that students gain as a result of their shared governance participation translates easily into traits that are held in esteem by employers.

When to Apply

Student shared governance committee appointments are coordinated through ASM. These appointments begin in the fall and last for one academic year. The call for applications is issued in each preceding spring semester, and appointments remain open until filled.
