COVID-19: Updates to Morgridge Center for Public Service Programming

This story was updated on Tuesday, March 24 at 10:45 a.m.

To keep the community safe and healthy, and in response to the risk of COVID-19 or novel coronavirus, UW–Madison has decided to move in-person classes to online instruction for the remainder of the semester to limit the spread and impact of the virus.

As a result, the Morgridge Center for Public Service is cancelling all events and co-curricular programs for the remainder of the semester.

These events and co-curricular programs include Badger Volunteers, community-based learning courses, Achievement Connections, Bagels & Research, community engagement workshops, and Be the Change Bash. See below for more information regarding Morgridge Center programming.

Community-based Learning Courses and Instructors

Students should not work with community partners as part of their community-based learning course and will need to discontinue their in-person work with their organization. If students are able to continue their work online, that is strongly encouraged. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to Haley Madden or at 608.770.1811.

Achievement Connections

UW volunteers supporting the Achievement Connections tutoring program should not go to their volunteer sites. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to CC Vang or at 608.890.2134.

Badger Volunteers Community Partners

Students should not work with community partners as part of the Badger Volunteers program, and will need to discontinue their in-person work with their organization. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to Anya Piotrowski or at 608.265.8218.

Badger Volunteers and Badger Volunteers Team Leader

Team Leaders: Please check in with your teams and make sure everyone sees your email and knows not to report to their sites for service.

Collective Care: Please check in on the wellbeing of your team members and let the Morgridge Center know if you or someone on your team wants, needs and/or is seeking additional support. Morgridge Center staff will remain in office for regular work hours for the time being and will be there to support you to the best of their ability and connect you to campus resources.

Education Sessions: All sessions scheduled during this time will be cancelled. All sessions scheduled after April 10 will take place unless University policy changes. If you were signed up for a session between March 14 and April 10, please sign up for an Ed Session taking place after April 10 or email Melissa Her for a make-up.

Community Partner Communication: We sent community partners the following message so that they know the actions being taken and how Badger Volunteers is impacted.

“Thank you for your role as a co-educator of our students at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. UW–Madison is working hard to keep our community safe and healthy, and in response to the risk of COVID-19 or novel coronavirus, UW–Madison has decided to move in-person classes to online instruction modes starting March 14 until at least April 10 to limit the spread and impact of the virus. As we know more, we will give updates should the timeline be extended.”

This means that students will not be able to work with community partners as part of the Badger Volunteers program and will need to discontinue their in-person work with their organization.

Timeline: If the timeline for returning to in-person classes shifts, we will be in touch with what you as Badger Volunteers should do.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to Anya Piotrowski or at 608.265.8218.
