Civically Educated: What It Takes To Vote

Posted on October 7, 2024 | By Chloe Kelm

In recognition of National Voter Education Week, the Morgridge Center for Public Service, in partnership with BadgersVote, asked students what steps were necessary to take part in a crucial aspect of civic engagement.

Understanding the value and importance of utilizing your voice by means of a vote is a major first step to become more civically educated in hopes it can become habitual, even after graduation.

It’s important to know what is needed and required to officially cast your ballot.

Voter Registration
In-person voter registration events on campus will be available on these dates and locations from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

  • Weekly Voter Registration in the Red Gym
    • Tuesday, Oct. 8 and 15
  • Pop-Up Campus Voter Registration
    • Thursday, Oct. 10, Steenbock Library and Tuesday, Oct. 15, College Library

Voter IDs
There are seven forms of valid voter IDs that you will need to present on election day in order to receive your ballot:

  • A Wisconsin driver license or state ID, U.S. passport, U.S. Uniformed Services card, Veterans Affairs ID, Tribal ID, Certificate of naturalization
  • Students only: a free campus-issued voter ID card. You can visit any of the two locations below Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to print out a physical copy.
    • The Morgridge Center for Public Service (Red Gym, Room 154, 716 Langdon St, Madison, WI 53706)
    • Wiscard Office (Union South, Room 149, 1308 W Dayton Street Madison, WI  53715)

Visit vote.wisc.edu for additional information on how to be prepared to vote in the Nov. 5 election. Informing individuals on where to vote, how to vote and why voting is important is a key tenant to further civic engagement outreach in every way possible. Get out the vote, Badgers!

  • “The least commendable purpose of acquiring knowledge…is to apply it to one’s own advancement – to achieve worldly success. A higher purpose is to fit one to live the intellectual life…A third and the highest purpose of acquiring knowledge is to use it for the benefit of mankind.” — Former UW President Charles Van Hise
